According to a letter obtained by CBS 13, the closure is slated for March 6th. Imagine receiving a letter informing you that your trusted healthcare provider is shutting down in just two months. That's precisely what happened to patients, and the impact is significant.
Sheryl Flament expressed her disappointment, stating, "I feel sorry for people who live in the area." She's not alone in her frustration. The healthcare system's constant changes and closures are taking a toll. "It’s frustrating to me in the whole health care system. There’s just so many things being abolished, not being done, referrals not being followed up," she added.
But here's where it gets tricky: If patients wish to continue seeing their doctors, Central Maine Healthcare has stated they must either follow them or find a new provider. The health system's website indicates that two doctors will relocate to Topsham Family Medicine, approximately 24 miles away. Patients with appointments after March 6th will automatically be scheduled at the new location.
CBS 13 sought a reason for the Gray Family Health Center's closure from Central Maine Healthcare. However, a spokesperson directed them to a statement on their website, which, surprisingly, didn't provide a specific explanation. This lack of transparency raises questions, doesn't it?
This closure occurs amidst a growing healthcare provider shortage in Maine. The Cicero Institute, a public policy organization, reports that 13 out of Maine's 16 counties lack sufficient doctors. Their data reveals a patient-to-provider ratio exceeding 3,500 to 1 in these counties.
For patients like Flament, every facility closure means the stressful scramble to find a new doctor. She sums up the situation with a stark assessment: "Our health care system has really gone down the sewer, and everybody knows it. Insurance rates are skyrocketing, and we’re just not getting in return what we’re paying for."
