In a thrilling showdown at Nationwide Arena, Mason Marchment showcased his exceptional skills by achieving a hat trick and contributing an assist, leading the Columbus Blue Jackets to an impressive 8-5 victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning. This win not only marked an end to Tampa Bay's remarkable 15-game point streak but also positioned the Blue Jackets as a formidable opponent in the league.
Joining Marchment in the spotlight were Charlie Coyle, who celebrated his 200th NHL goal alongside two assists, and Adam Fantilli, who not only scored a goal but also assisted on two others. Jet Greaves played a pivotal role in net, making 25 saves for the Blue Jackets, now holding a record of 24 wins, 20 losses, and 7 overtime losses, with six victories in their last seven games.
The game started with Columbus establishing an early lead, finishing the first period at 4-2. Although Tampa Bay fought back to tie the game at 4-4 in the second period, the Blue Jackets quickly regained control, scoring twice before the end of that period. "I think what really stood out to me was how we responded after they pushed back in the second period," Marchment reflected. "Maintaining our momentum and keeping them under pressure was crucial for our success."
On the opposing side, Nikita Kucherov excelled, scoring once and assisting on three goals, while Jake Guentzel netted two goals and added an assist. Goaltender Jonas Johansson made 23 saves for Tampa Bay, whose streak of 14 wins and one overtime loss became the third-longest in the franchise's history, following 16 games in 2018-19 and 18 in 2003-04.
Despite the setback, Lightning coach Jon Cooper acknowledged the significance of their recent performance, stating, "We gathered 29 out of a possible 30 points over our last games; eventually, every team faces a loss. Columbus has a talented roster, highlighted by one of the league’s top defensemen, Zach Werenski. They were well-prepared for us."
The Lightning, coming off a tight shootout victory against the Chicago Blackhawks, faced challenges as they lost defenseman Erik Cernak to injury and forward Gage Goncalves due to illness early in the game. However, Guentzel managed to level the score at 1-1 just a couple of minutes later, thanks to an unfortunate own goal that occurred when Greaves attempted to clear the puck, inadvertently sending it into his own net off Isac Lundestrom's skate.
Marchment quickly restored Columbus' lead with a skillful shot from the slot, making it 2-1 at 8:37. The game continued to see-saw, with Darren Raddysh leveling it again at 2-2 with a power-play goal before Fantilli broke free from a 17-game scoring drought, pushing the score to 3-2. Dmitri Voronkov capped off the first period with a quick poke check and subsequent shot that found its way past the Lightning goalie, closing the frame at 4-2.
Kucherov opened the second-period scoring at 3:29, bringing Tampa Bay within one goal, only for Anthony Cirelli to tie it up at 4-4 shortly thereafter. Marchment then seized the lead again for Columbus with his second goal, and Coyle extended the margin to 6-4 late in the second period with another power-play goal. Sean Monahan later sealed the victory with an empty-net goal in the third before Guentzel scored a late consolation goal for Tampa Bay, resulting in an 8-5 final score.
This match marked Marchment's third career hat trick, and he now boasts an impressive eight goals in his last nine games following his trade from the Seattle Kraken on December 19. Blue Jackets head coach Rick Bowness remarked, "While we know we can perform better, what matters most is finding a way to win regardless of the circumstances."
As a noteworthy side note, Kucherov continued his scoring streak, amassing 11 points over five games in January, including three goals and eight assists, highlighting his significant impact during this stretch.
