What happens when a force that cannot be stopped meets an object that cannot be moved? This intriguing scenario may unfold this Sunday night on Unrivaled at 7:30 p.m. ET on truTV, as Chelsea Gray's team, known as Rose, goes head-to-head against Alyssa Thomas's squad, called Laces.
Picture a nail-biting end-of-game moment where Rose is just a few points away from victory. The ball is in Gray's hands, setting the stage for the "Point Gawd" to potentially score yet another game-winning shot. However, as she approaches the half-court line, Thomas is right there, intensely focused on preventing Gray from adding more accolades to her Unrivaled legacy.
While Friday night's matches showcased some of the best moments so far (you can check out the recap here), the impending clash between Rose and Laces is shaping up to be the highlight of the Unrivaled season.
Both teams enter their initial matchup with impressive 3-1 records and remarkably similar statistics. Laces boasts an impressive average of 74.8 points per game, leading the league, while Rose closely follows with 74.3 points, ranking second. Both teams convert exactly 57 percent of their field goal attempts, although Rose has excelled in three-point shooting, while Laces shows a stronger performance in two-pointers. Both squads also average 8.3 free throws per game and manage to snag 5.5 steals. Laces edges out Rose by about 1.5 rebounds and a little over one assist per game, but Rose has the upper hand with 1.5 fewer turnovers and nearly 1.25 fewer fouls committed. Notably, Rose allows the fewest opponent points per game at 68, while Laces is just behind them at 68.5.
It’s clear that these two teams are evenly matched, both packed with the experience necessary to gain an edge in this fast-paced 3x3 format.
Kahleah Copper’s return to her prime form on Sunday would be a significant asset for Rose, especially after her season debut on Friday. Although "The Chelsea Gray Show" has the potential to lead to numerous victories, Rose may require additional support to overcome Laces. So far this season, Brittney Sykes has been pivotal for Laces, thanks to her relentless aggression and remarkable three-point shooting. Jackie Young also seems poised to step up should Sykes face any drop in output.
However, while much of the focus will undoubtedly be on stars like Gray and Thomas, it’s entirely possible that a lesser-known player such as Naz Hillmon, Maddy Siegrist, Sug Sutton, or Lexie Hull could make a critical impact, either through scoring timely baskets or executing crucial defensive plays that secure victory for their team.
Have the Hive found their winning strategy? After clinching their very first win in club history by overcoming a late surge from Rose, the Hive has truly found their groove. Both Kelsey Mitchell and Sonia Citron appear to have fully adapted to the Unrivaled environment, with Mitchell showcasing a diverse scoring ability, netting 24 points, and Citron demonstrating newfound confidence with 14 points. From the bench, Saniya Rivers and Monique Billings provided Hive with much-needed offensive firepower and defensive zeal, with Rivers contributing 14 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks, and Billings delivering a solid double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Next, Hive will face a challenging test against Phantom at 8:45 p.m. ET on truTV, as they attempt to maintain their newfound success.
Phantom, in particular, will aim to challenge Hive's defense by exploiting the dynamic two-player game between Kelsey Plum and Aliyah Boston. Plum's skill as both a pull-up shooter and a driver, combined with Boston's ability to hit jumpers or attack the basket, creates a potent offensive strategy that can break even the toughest defenses.
Defensive stalwarts like Natasha Cloud and Tiffany Hayes may be particularly well-suited to contain Mitchell, while Phantom's dual-big setup featuring Boston and Kiki Iriafen could restrict Hive's chances for easy baskets.
Despite their current 2-2 record, the Ghost Gang may be stronger than it appears; they've lost their two games by a mere total of eight points. Coming off a loss, they are likely to come out energized, putting pressure on Hive, who must remain focused following their first victory.
While this matchup may not generate as much excitement as the Rose-Laces duel, it promises to deliver its own share of thrilling moments, showcasing a confrontation between the Kelseys, a battle among Fever stars, the inaugural Kitron contest, and much more.
